Opening May 25: “Historic Orcas Photographs”
The Orcas Island Historical Museum and the Peter C Fisher Gallery are collaborating on an exhibition of reprints of old photographs from various sources that have been carefully restored. The detailed 1880’s – 1890’s groundcover map of Orcas is fascinating, with roads, homes, owners, wetlands, etc. all carefully drawn.
One delightful item is a reproduction of the San Juan Islands section of the 1841 Wilkes Expedition map. This beautiful and somewhat fanciful document includes two imaginary islands (Adolphus and Gordon) added north of Orcas by disgruntled crew to make Wilkes look bad, as he had a reputation as a difficult leader.

Opening August 24: “Still Life: Stark Contrasts”
This portfolio gathers subject matter and ideas that play with and challenge our perception of bold opposites: hard versus soft, bright against dim, tattered or new, fleeting versus ancient. Unusual juxtapositions enliven this series: two photographs, #9 & #11, both taken on July 4th, exemplify how very differently our flag may be displayed.
To the left is a close up of a polished shell with strong backlight illuminating the translucent spiral. Another picture, #6, is of a water pitcher handle’s rainbow colors, with the ephemeral quality of sunlight briefly transforming a utilitarian object into a radiant sculpture. These pictures celebrate the range of beauty created by human ingenuity.

Work in progress: “Cascade Falls”
Orcas Island is known for Moran State Park which includes an old growth forest and and a lookout tower on top of Mount Constitution. One of my favorite haunts there is Cascade Falls. This string of small but delightful waterfalls is often lit by spots of light filtering through the huge trees.
As accumulated rainfall descends from Mountain Lake to Buck Bay, it creates a range of aural effects from gentle to thunderous depending on the flow and path of the stream. In some seasons skitterbugs, in others colorful submerged leaves decorate the fluctuating shades and clarity of the water. At turns tranquil and voracious, the sounds and sights of Cascade Falls sooth and entice.

Work in progress: “Geomancing the Omphalos”
The “Geomancing the Omphalos” Portfolio is expected to be completed in 2013. These self portraits are hand painted in Photoshop with brushwork inspired by the individual qualities of each image.
This series explores the inspiring ways that spirit illuminates the transcendent power of art. If the soul were like a diamond, these images reveal facets of awareness, illuminating the mysteries of the noumenous. “Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” Jonathan Swift
